Olympic Figure Skating
Have you heard of Kim Yuna? She is the world’s best ice skating champion. I will tell you about the history of ice skates, the competition, and the famous athletes like Kim Yuna.
In the 14th century, the Dutch invented wooden ice skates with iron runners on the bottom. In the next century, the Dutch added double-edged blades because it made them go farther and smoother.
Ice skates were brought to Britain by the Dutch. In Britain, James II was ruling at the time when he returned to England, this new sport got loved by everyone and became very popular.
Ice skating competitions began appearing in the 19th century. A competition named ‘The European Skating Championships’ was first made in Hamburg. Later, it went to Saint Petersburg and other countries.
The countries that excel in ice skates are at the top, Austria, Belgium (city of Brussels), Canada, and the 15th is South Korea, Seoul. Seoul is very good at Skating. It is not so bad!
My favorite athletes are Peggy Fleming, and Kristi Yamaguchi. Kristi is an American figure skater. She won two championships in 1991 and 1992. Peggy is also an American figure skater who won the Olympics in 1988 in female division. I like them because they are very good at skating.
Throughout this research I have learned that figure skating is a fun and exciting Olympic sport. I want to see it at Pyeongchang Olympic in 2018!
