Students’ Ties with Exams

South Korea, while considering its students as its most valued asset is ironically causing them significant distress, and the prime reason associated with an exam has been working. Korea’s suicidal rate has been maintaining the top spot in the world. One in every hundred thousand Koreans, twenty-five Koreans commit suicide every year. We can assume that a Korea’s social system is defective, and exam keeps the main factor of deficiency. These days, we are ignoring the purpose of exams, students’ stress issues, and how the exams change every year.

The main function of examinations is to evaluate the level of competence and knowledge a student possesses in a certain field. In a better society, tests would be a means of acquiring knowledge for both students and teachers giving them the correct solution of what do with the defect. They provide a mechanism that can be utilized to determine the exact level of learning material as well as should be the main force behind the growth. However, exam is frequently misinterpreted as a measurement of achievement of students. Sadly, today’s society is a place where students are pushed to a competitive mindset, inhere exams become a means to outperform others, rather than a steppingstone in the process of learning.

Exams have a tool for students who should be getting educated, to find the way to the peak that bring a lot of pressure. We mistakenly uphold a flawed system that emphasizes rankings and grades, pushing students towards anxiety and exhaustion instead of academic accomplishments. Students’ will to excel leads to their being at the center of the pressure, which brings them into incessant circle of stress. By now, students can easily find a way to relate their exam grades with their self-worth, making the stress of upcoming tests almost inevitable, interrupting both their performance and well-beings.

Alternatives to traditional exams can be also explored. For instance, project-based assessments, oral exams and collaboration work can offer more comprehensive insights into a student's capabilities. These methods can promote critical and creative thinking, since they require students to use their knowledge in real-life and imaginative situations. Despite these fine alternatives, it can seem nonsense to bring satisficed outcomes after a sudden change in the education system. However, the most crucial part is to fix our perception toward exams. Our seduced desire to the competing must be removed.

All various included problems with exams are on working inducing students to an original purpose of exams, causing students stress and requiring the alternatives. Korea demonstrates to other countries the worst instance about education according to its suicidal rate. Despite the effort and the responsibility of the government, students and parents need to change their views toward the exams. Their anxiety is associated with competing and comparing, valued that most important parts of study. However, their goals aren’t achieved by competing, the worth conception they should conceive is to perceive what they know, and they don’t.
