The Importance of Christmas

Christmas is one of many people’s favorite holidays. People enjoy this day by spending it with their family and friends. Although Christmas is loved y all, some might not be aware of its meaning and origin. However, Christmas is special due to its history, and people around the world celebrate this day in many ways.

Christmas is a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. It is commemorated on December 25th every year. This day originated from the Roman Empire which believed in the sun god before B.C. December 25th is the anniversary of the sun god and a festival is held. Back then, this was a big event that started with a grand feast everyone could enjoy. It has been celebrated like this every year since 350 A.D. Later, this day was officially designated as Jesus’s birthday as we know it today.

In the Christmas season, people often listen to songs called carols. Carols are songs about Christmas. Some of the most popular and well-known ones are “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” These songs are usually joyful and exciting, mentioning the fun times people have together in the winter season. Since winter is at the end of the year, people can reflect upon the past year and wish for good things to happen in the new year.

Around Christmas, the movie Home Alone comes to many people’s minds. This movie is a story about little Kevin protecting his house from thieves while his family goes on a Christmas trip without him. The bad guys coming near Christmas time makes this movie more fun. I think this movie is popular because Christmas is a family holiday. It makes us feel the love and importance of family. Instead of being alone, Kevin is reunited with his family and able to enjoy the holiday with his loved ones.

Since Christmas is celebrated all over the world, people can enjoy it in different ways depending on where they live. For example, in Great Britain, every member of the family sits in front of the fireplace and burns a log, and wishes for good luck. In the US, people spend time with family eating turkey. Many decorate the house very colorfully with ornaments. There is a part of the world where Christmas is celebrated in summer. Some countries like Australia are located in Southern Hemisphere, and people can see dressed-up “Santas” surfing in the ocean!
